4 Secrets to Making a Great Impression at Your Next Job Interview

It doesn’t matter whether you’re trying to land your first gig or hunting for an upgrade from your current one, job interviews can be stressful.  You want them to like you, but you also want to appear professional and showcase your skills. Then there’s the worry about what to wear, how much is too much when it comes to the information you provide and the stress of whether the role presents the same way in person as it does on paper. Here are a few things you can do to put your mind at ease and make sure you make a great impression:

  1. Smile

This one may seem simple but everyone is far more likable when they’re smiling. Not only will this give you a confidence boost but it will also help you make a good first impression which sets the tone for the rest of your interview. Now is a good time to invest in some professional teeth whitening and address any other issues you may have with your smile so you can rock that grin like you were born for the job.

  1. Dress to impress

No, we’re not talking about a suit and tie, not necessarily anyway. When you’re in the process of interviewing, you should definitely follow the adage of “dress for the job you want, not the job you have.” Sure there will be exceptions to this rule if an employer specifies a different dress code for the meeting, but otherwise, show up like you already have the job.

When you dress to impress, you show potential employers that you’re keen to join the company and ready to work. It also shows them that you understand and respect the industry and position you’re applying for. As a side note, if your job is of the suit and tie variety, or pencil skirt and stockings variety, don’t just show up in off-the-rack clothing. You don’t have to go out and spend thousands on your interview outfit, but it should definitely be tailored in order to highlight your professionalism.

  1. Do your research

Half the reason people stress when heading into an interview is because they’re not properly prepared. Making sure you’re familiar with the official position description and the company’s website is the bare minimum for this step. However, if you really want to shine and stand out from other candidates, then hunt down any literature they publish, including formal pieces like reports, informal communications such as their social media pages, and any newsletters or magazines that the company creates.

  1. Be yourself

Last, but not least, remember to be authentic. Yes, you want to make a good impression but if you do that by being entirely fake, they’ll see right through you. Maybe not at your interview, maybe not even within your first few months of the job, but at some point, they will. Plus, faking it will destroy your confidence.

Know how your personality and skill set will fit with the job and company and capitalize on that rather than trying to be someone you’re not. Be ready to discuss what you can bring to the table and how you can improve their current processes. A square peg is never going to fit into a round hole so it’s better to find out now whether you and the business go well together, too.

Interviews will always be stressful but if you follow these tips, you’ll be far more confident and make a great impression. Good luck and happy hunting.
